The Fun Gourmet Vege/Fruit Skewer

Step 1:
Hold the coloured end of the skewer in one hand and gently push the other end into the END of the potato. You want to make a spiral out of the LENGTH of the potato not the WIDTH. The longer the potato the longer the spiral you get.

Step 2:
Poke the skewer into the end of the potatoe till the ring meets the potatoe. Now turn the potatoe in an anticlockwise direction with your left hand asyou turn the skewer handle in a clockwise direction with your right hand.
Now turn the potato while holding the handle such that you can feel that the cutting ring is moving through the potato. Continue until the cutting ring exits the other end of the potato. The end of the spiral should still be lodged in the cutting ring so that as you continue turning the potato more of the spiral exits the potato until the entire spiral is out of the potato.
Now slide the potato which has a large hole in it , over the coloured handle end of the skewer. Now gently free the spiral from the cutting ring and slide it off the coloured end of the skewer as well.

IMPORTANT!!!
Sometimes the spiral will stay inside the potato and the cutting ring will exit on it's own. In this case pull the skewer through the potato so the potato exits over the coloured end of the skewer. Now the spiral is still inside the potato so take a paring knife and poke the tip of the blade into either end of the spiral and gently turn your knife handle while the blade tip is griping the spiral. Turn such that the spiral starts to exit the potato.

Putting the tip of the paring knife into the end you first poked the
skewer into you will now turn the paring knife in your right hand in an anticlockwise direction while turning the potato in your left hand in a clockwise direction. Turning the potato in the opposite way you are turning the knife helps to extract the spiral. If the spiral does not come out you
may have to push the tip of the paring knife blade in further to get a better grip. Continue until the spiral is completely out. Do this just above your bench top so if the spiral falls it will not break falling onto the bench.

PRESENTATION IDEAS
1) Cut a piece off the end of the spiral (about the first one and a half twists of the spiral) and thread that back into the end of the potato (the same end where it came from) so it forms a plug. N.B. It will only thread in one way, so if it doesnt want to thread in turn it the other way.
Now you can fill the cavity with whatever you want to e.g. cheese/mince etc.you decide..and then create another plug from the other end of the spiral and plug the other end of the potato. Now bake the whole potato.

2) Deep fry the entire spiral or cut half way through the spiral the entire length of the spiral such that you create half spiral rings that you can deep fry and call "poor man's prawns!" Rinse the "prawns" under cold water to get rid of the starch and then pat the prawns dry with a cloth or paper towel before deep frying. Sprinkle on some seafood seasoning, garlic powder and grated cheese before serving. Delicious!! Kids love them.

3) Cut the potato, (the spiral has been taken out of) length ways so you expose the cavity the spiral came from and then lay the spiral back into this cavity and bake. You can have more of the spiral exposed by slicing more of the potato. Cutting through the exact middle of the hole left by the spiral will result in half the spiral exposed above the potato base.
Slicing more off the potato base will expose more of the spiral when it is laid back into the cavity it came from. You choose. Sprinkle seasoning over the "spiratoto" before baking and melt a little cheese over the top before serving. If you are doing a number of potatoes like this you will have potato halves without a spiral. Slice a little off the ends of two of these halves (with just the spiral cavity) so they butt neatly together and hold them together with tooth picks while baking. To make the potato
halves sit upright and not lay at different angles you may have to slice a little off the base of them. You have now formed a channel into which you can put fillings of your choice. You can also connect a number of them together, for ease of filling and cooking, and then take the toothpicks out and break them up once they are baked. Now they are ready for serving.

4) Spiral out a carrot, kumera or cooked beetroot and use part of the carrot, kumera or beetroot spiral to tread into the potato.
TEST THE CARROT AND KUMERA FOR HARDNESS. IF YOU FEEL YOU HAVE TO TURN WITH MORE PRESSURE THAN WITH POTATO THEN STOP AND PARTLY COOK THE VEGETABLE FIRST, TO SOFTEN THE VEGETABLE, OTHERWISE YOU ARE RISKING BREAKING THE CUTTING RING OFF FROM THE SKEWER.
Begin by screwing the piece of spiral into the potato by hand and when it has got a grip on the spiral track inside the potato use the tip of a paring knife blade from the OPPOSITE end (poking
the paring knife up inside the cavity) to continue threading the spiral into the body of the vegetable. (This is a safeguard so that the spiral does not break on you ). Once the spiral is firmly in place inside the cavity hand tread the plug (refer to 1) above) into the end you just had the paring knife in and then go to the other end with your paring knife and continue to thread the spiral until it meets the plug you have just put in. Now put the other plug in the remaining end to complete your gourmet creation!.
Mix and match vegetables. For example if you put a carrot spiral into a potato you have a "Potarrot!" and if you put a potato spiral in a carrot you have a "caratato!" You work out what a "kumatato" is and what do you think a "caraumera" is!! Now there is such a thing as a "potataroot" as well.
